In absolute numbers India is leading, with China, Indonesia and Nigeria following. These are all countries with large populations and it is estimated that 100 per cent of children aged 5 to 10 are enrolled in the first three. In Nigeria the rate is around 85 per cent. The lowest rate for enrolment can be found in Eritrea and Djibouti with 51 and 66 per cent, respectively.

What is compulsory in some territories is a rarity in others. Worldwide approximately 535 million children aged 11 to 16 are enrolled in secondary education, around 73 per cent.

Out of the 27 per cent of children not in secondary education the highest number can be found in India, with 47 millions total more than the three runner-ups Nigeria, Pakistan and Ethiopia combined.

In relative terms other countries are doing worse, 35% in South Asia and 57% in Sub-Saharan Africa are not in Secondary education. The lowest rate is 17% in the Central African Republic.
