In 2022 world population estimates reached 8 billion; that is 8 thousand million. Back in 1973, so only 50 years ago, the population was around 4 billion. The biggest decline between 1973 and 2022 in population has happened in Ukraine (2.8 Million), followed by Bulgaria (1.2 million), Georgia (1 million), Hungary (458,000) and Romania (408,000). Between 1973 and 2022 the biggest absolute growth happened in India (more than 660 Million), followed by China (almost 475 Million), Pakistan (135 Million), Indonesia (122 Million) and the USA (107 Million). Nigeria, Brazil, Bangladesh, Ethiopia and Mexico complete the top 10. The highest growth rate is noted in United Arab Emirates (6.2%), Qatar (5.2%), Mayotte (4.3 %), Turks and Caicos (4%) and Western Sahara (4%).

In 2022 world population estimates reached 8 billion; that is 8 thousand million. Most of the people still live in China, followed by India, the United States of America. Indonesia and Pakistan complete the top 5. The image is expected to change in this century: China is feeling the impact of its one-child-policy and will be overtaken by India in total population numbers, Nigeria will be on third place. The major shift in growing world population will will be from Asia to Africa and Nigeria is expected to be the country with the biggest population in the next century. Between 2011 and 2022 the biggest absolute growth happened in India (almost 160 Million), followed by China (almost 70 Million), Nigeria (53 Million), Pakistan (37 Million) and Ethiopia (31 Million). The highest growth rate are noted in Jordan (4%), Niger (3.8%), Mayotte (3.6 %), Qatar (3.6%) and Angola (3.4%) The biggest decline in population has happened in Ukraine (5.8 Million), followed by Japan (4 Million), Italy (almost 1 Million), Venezuela (800.000) and Bulgaria (760.000). Reasons for that vary between war (Ukraine), political crisis (Venezuela) and ageing population (Japan).

In 2022 world population estimates reached 8 billion; that is 8 thousand million. Most of the people still live in China, followed by India, the United States of America. Indonesia and Pakistan. The image shown here is expected to change in this century: China is feeling the impact of its one-child-policy and will be soon overtaken by India in total population numbers, Nigeria will take over the USA to become the third-most populated country. Global population growth has started shifting away from Asia towards the African continent, with Nigeria's ongoing growth being a main symbol for the continent's future young generations, while many other regions of the world started seeing stagnating or even declining population numbers, along with new demographic challenges such as a declining workforce and ageing societies.

This map shows the global proportion of asylum-seeker originating there in 2018. An asylum-seeker is someone whose request for sanctuary has yet to be processed.

The colour shading indicates the major geographic regions of the world used in all Worldmapper cartograms (see reference map).

Data sources
This map uses data by UNHCR (last accessed June 2019). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.
