The top producer of sunflower seeds in 2016 was Ukraine with 13,626,890 tons, followed by Russia (11,010,197 tons), Argentina (3,000,367 tons), China (2,587,422 tons) and Romania (2,032,340 tons). Bulgaria, Turkey, Hungary, United States and France complete the top 10.

The Russian invasion in 2022 impacted all agricultural production in the Ukraine. The sunflower production peaked in 2021 and then dropped significantly in 2022. It now stabilised on the 2016 levels.
