Flooding kills people in every region of the world. The count of flood deaths is highest in Southern Asia and Eastern Asia.
India is the territory with the most flood deaths over the 17 year period, while more flood disaster happened in Malawi and China. The most economical damages through floods were caused in China, followed by the USA and Thailand.
According to recent studies an increased occurrence of such events due to climate change and global warming is highly likely.

Technical Notes This map shows the proportion of all people killed in flood disasters between 2001 and 2017, that died there.
Definition:
For a disaster to included at least one of the following criteria must be fulfilled: Ten (10) or more people reported killed Hundred (100) or more people reported affected Declaration of a state of emergency Call for international assistance
Data sources This map uses data by EM-DAT: The Emergency Events Database – (last accessed March 2018). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.
All modifications to the original data source are noted in our data sheets.
