The limits of my language mean the limits of my world. (Die Grenzen meiner Sprache bedeuten die Grenzen meiner Welt.)
Japanese is spoken by roughly 126 million people in around 18 territories. Around 99% of first-language Japanese speakers live in Japan. Most of the remainder live in the United States (notably California and Hawaii), and Brazil (mostly in the states of São Paulo and Paraná).
The history of Japanese is something of a mystery, partly because its relationships with other languages remains poorly understood.
