Malayalam is a language of India. Roughly 3% of the population there speak it as a first language. The vast majority of Malayalam speakers live in the state of Kerala, in south-west India. Malayalam is closely related to Tamil.
There are roughly 34 million speakers, in at least 11 territories. After India, the largest number of speakers are in the United Arab Emirates. There are also smaller numbers in Malaysia, Bahrain, Singapore, Israel, Qatar, the United States and the United Kingdom.
