According to the Oxford dictionary a storm is ‘a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds and usually rain, thunder, lightning, or snow.’
Most of the damaging storms happened in the United States, followed by China, the Philippines and Indonesia. Japan is on fourth place. France is the first European country on twelve place. Most people killed by storms live in Myanmar, almost 140 000 between 2000 and 2017, followed by the Philippines with almost 20 000 people casualties. The United States suffered most financial damages caused by storms, followed by China and Puerto Rico. The highest proportion of people losing their home due to storms lives in China, followed by India and Vietnam.
According to recent studies an increased occurrence of such events due to climate change and global warming is highly likely.
