According to the FAO: “tomato is is the second most important vegetable crop next to potato.”
The biggest producer of tomatoes in 2016 was China by far with more than 50 million tons harvested, followed by India, USA, Turkey and Egypt. Italy, Iran, Spain, Brazil and Mexico complete the top 10. Overall tomatoes are harvested in more than 170 countries.
The biggest increase in tomatoes harvested between 2000 and 2016 happened in China, followed by India and Turkey. The biggest decline in harvest in that period happened in Italy, followed by Greece and the United Arab Emirates.
