More than half of the more than 51 million tons of the global production is harvested in China, followed by India, Egypt, Turkey and Iran. Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Spain and and the Philippines complete the top 10. Overall eggplants are planted in almost 100 countries world wide. Eggplant – or Aubergine – is a species of the nightshade plant family and most popular in Asian, North African and Southern European cuisine.

Technical Notes

Territory size is proportional to eggplants (Solanum melongena. Also called aubergines.) harvested there in 2016.

Data sources
This map uses data by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)  (last accessed March 2018). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.

All modification to the original data source are noted in our data sheets.
