According to UNICEF and WHO, “It is estimated that more than 200 million girls and women alive today have undergone female genital mutilation in the countries where the practice is concentrated. Furthermore, there are an estimated 3 million girls at risk of undergoing female genital mutilation every year. The majority of girls are cut before they turn 15 years old.”
The highest number of girls who have undergone FGM, live in Indonesia – more than 17 million and almost half of the 0-14 year old girls. Nigeria is on second place with almost 5 million girls, followed by Ethiopia and Mali, both with more than 3 million girls in that age group. Gambia has the highest percentage of girls undergone FGM (56.1), followed by Mauritania (51.4) and Indonesia (49.2).
