Territory size shows the proportion of the number of fewer scientific papers that were published in 2015 compared with 2005, whose authors work there.
Definition
Scientific and technical journal articles refer to the number of scientific and engineering articles published in the following fields: physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, clinical medicine, biomedical research, engineering and technology, and earth and space sciences.
Data sources
National Science Foundation, Science and Engineering Indicators, obtained via the World Bank, World Development Indicators (last accessed March 2018). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.
All modification to the original data source are noted in our data sheets. Data for this map will soon be available as a download.
