Sikhism was founded on the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and nine successive gurus in fifteenth century Northern India, and is the fifth-largest religion in the world. Sikhism originated from the word Sikh, which in turn comes from the Sanskrit root meaning ‘disciple’ or ‘learner’, meaning ‘instruction.’ After India, the largest populations of Sikhs are in Canada and the United Kingdom.
