On 31 December 2019, the WHO was informed about the first cases in Wuhan, China. During the January 2020 the disease spread further within China and also started to venture into neighbouring (and some further away) countries. During February new regional hotspots developed in South Korea, Italy and Iran. During March the disease spread further mostly in Central and Southern Europe and the USA.
The highest number of new cases in March 2020 was recorded in USA (140.578), followed by Italy (100.611), Spain (85.163), Germany (61.856) and Iran (44.013). By the end of the month there are cases in 205 countries/territories.
Italy recording the most deaths that month (11.526), followed by Spain (10.045), France (3.015) and Iran (2.855).
