Whales caught decline between 1986-90 and 2012-16

Looking at the five-year period right after the moratorium 1986-1990 and the five most recent recorded years 2012-2016 show some pattern changes and globally the whales caught have halved.

The biggest decline in whale catches happened in Russia, in the 2012-16 period they only caught 10 per cent of their (USSR) 1986-90 numbers, followed by Japan, which reduced their numbers by 70 per cent.

Data sources
This map uses data by International Whaling Commission (last accessed July 2018). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.

Further notes on the data, as well as all modifications to the original data source are noted in our data sheets. Data for this map will soon be available as a download.
