Avocados are a commodity in the Western world, a food item that became very popular on the plates and on instagram during this millennium.

The biggest decline of avocado production is recorded in the United States, which still holds a spot in the Top 10 in 2016, but lost its second place to the Dominican Republic. The runner-up is El Salvador, followed by Philippines and Rwanda.

Technical Notes

Territory size is proportional to the decline in avocado harvested there between 2000 and 2016.

Data sources
This map uses data by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)  (last accessed March 2018). We aim to map as complete data as possible and therefore estimate data for missing values. In some cases, missing data for very small territories is not used in the cartogram and that area is therefore omitted in the map.

All modification to the original data source are noted in our data sheets.
